Wolf Eyes D2AF Cree P4 LED Flashlight

Good flashlights are one of those things where once you have one, you don't know how you could ever get by without one. We as humans are creatures of daylight and it only makes sense we constantly strive for better sources of artificial sunshine. Whether for tactical reasons, camping, or making your way through your house during a blackout, flashlights have become our way of having a portable light source to help us complete our tasks. Today I'd like to share a review on a ‘tactical' flashlight coming from a brand named Wolf Eyes. Is it a good quality light? Will it work for the tactical purposes needed in airsoft? One of the largest limiting factors in portable light sources is their dependence on batteries. Most tactical quality lights use CR-123a batteries which when bought at retail prices can cost quite a bit. At the store down the street from me, they sell for about $6 each and most flashlights will eat up 2 of these batteries in about an hour tops. When purchased online, these batteries are much cheaper (about $1 each) but operating cost can still add up quickly.


In comes my initial reason for trying Wolf Eyes and their lights. They come included with their own Lithium Ion batteries along with a charger. Good bye expensive batteries and hello rechargables! So with part a non-issue, I put in my order with WolfEyes-Canada.com for a "Cree P4 D2AF" LED flashlight advertised at 100 lumens


Upon arrival the first thing I noticed is it's fantastic packaging. The flashlight comes packed snug in a nice black box with firm foam cutouts for the charger and battery. Also included is some simple documentation with care instructions. It's not extensive, but it does It's job describing how to get the most out of your investment.


Next comes the main event- the light itself. First thing I noticed is it's solid weight and feel. Defiantly lets you know this isn't a toy. I found it well-balanced and felt great in my hand. The tail cap is a push-type tactical switch much alike other lights of it's kind.





Looking in the battery compartment, it appears that the whole thing has a copper lining that just shouts quality. The look and feel of the light is simply fantastic. Good news so far!





Next up is the battery. I was expecting something that looked like the traditional CR-123a but the Wolf Eyes Li-ion battery a bit different. While the same diameter, the Wolf Eyes Li-ion rechargeable battery was exactly double the length of a single CR-123a battery. After a quick check on their website, I discovered a bonus feature that you can still use cr-123a batteries if the need arises.





The last thing included is a charger. It plugs into the wall and has a slot for charging 2 Wolf Eyes Li-ion batteries at same time (I suppose if you purchase a spare you can use the other slot). The charger is nice but nothing too special.


So now for some comparison pictures. All photographs were taken with a Nikon d40 camera with a tripod. Shutter speed was fixed. The wall the lights are shining on is approximately 50 feet away. I compared 3 lights: The Wolf-Eyes Cree P4 LED, a generic LED flashlight that uses CR-123a's, and a typical Mag light.

As you can see from the pictures the Wolf Eyes LED is considerably brighter. Even the generic LED that uses the same voltage is noticeably dimmer.


My last test is the battery life. I did 2 tests- one using traditional CR-123a batteries and one with it's own rechargeable one. Using 2 CR-123a batteries, the flashlight went at full power for a solid 50 minutes and then dimmed greatly but stayed on for an additional 30 minutes. With the included rechargeable battery the flashlight shown at full power for an amazing 3hours! I was completely expecting it also to live about 1hr but it just kept going.


CONCLUSION
I'm impressed with the quality and power this small light contains. While Wolf Eyes isn't as well known as some other brands, they defiantly deserve some attention. The flashlight, rechargeable battery and charger along with a decent warranty makes it a solid investment. Whether using this flashlight for Airsoft, law enforcement, or just using it for camping purposes, the Wolf Eyes Cree P4 D2AF LED flashlight will be a fantastic companion in the dark.
